Roy said the event showcased the people behind the uniforms. “They’re here to show off their equipment, their expertise, their knowledge, the training that they do, and the functions that they carry out on behalf of Canada,” he said.
Aviation was also part of the celebration, with Select Aviation College displaying a Robinson R44 helicopter. Vintage Wings of Canada aircraft, including the Cornell, Chipmunk, and Fleet Finch, were also featured.
Sgt. William Loos of the SD&G Highlanders said the event provided an opportunity for local reserve units to educate the public about their work and training. “We are displaying some equipment and some weapons we use on a lot of bases in the field and on training, as well as all the other regiments that are here accompanying us,” said Loos. He said visitors, including younger attendees, gained a better understanding of the responsibility involved when handling military equipment.
“When they finally get to pick it up, they realize the weight of them and the capabilities,” said Loos. Loos also highlighted opportunities for youth through local Army, Navy, and Air Cadets programs, which introduce participants to aspects of military life before they are eligible to join the Armed Forces. The event also included entertainment from the Seaway Winds Concert Band and the MacCulloch Dancers. Military mascots Juno and Sonar visited with families throughout the afternoon.
The celebration also featured a tug-of-war competition won by the St. Andrew’s Saints. Team captain Thomas Booijink said the group, based around the St. Andrews and Martintown area, started four years ago and trains weekly. “It was awesome. Great day. Lots of fun,” said Booijink about the victory.
The event concluded with thanks to volunteers and community supporters. A special recognition was also given to Jean McIntyre and local knitters who created 72 Izzy Dolls to be sent to Canadian soldiers currently serving in Latvia.
