The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297’s Annual Poppy Campaign began October 31 and runs through November 10, leading up to Remembrance Day. As a national symbol of remembrance, the poppy is worn to honour Canada’s Veterans and fallen heroes.
“The Period of Remembrance starts on October 31,” said Mavis Williamson, Poppy Chair. “Wearing a poppy is a visible act of remembrance, and we appreciate the community’s ongoing support.” Poppies are distributed by volunteers throughout Cornwall and are also available in local stores. Donations support the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund, which directly benefits veterans.
A ceremonial poppy was presented to Mayor Justin Towndale on October 31 at a flag-raising at City Hall. The Legion also invites residents to visit Second Street, where Veterans Walk is now adorned with memorial banners. “It’s overwhelming to turn onto Second and see the faces of our soldiers,” said Williamson, who also chairs the Memorial Banner project.
Those interested in sponsoring a banner for 2026 can apply at the Legion on Second Street. As always, the community is encouraged to reflect, remember, and support. Lest we forget.
