Innovative and dedicated educators are this year’s recipients of awards presented by the Upper Canada District School Board.
Among those receiving Creativity and Innovation Awards are Glengarry District High School teachers Lindsey Howes, Brittany MacLennan, Tammy MacSweyn, Marrideth Renwick, and Shana Thomas Lajoie. This group of educators was recognized for launching a unique specialist program that allows students to explore their interests through experiential learning. Their collaboration with community partners provides leadership opportunities and real-world connections. Students learn skills such as pickling and preserving, cycling, curling, robotics, and manicures to name a few. What truly sets this program apart is the reciprocal partnership with Community Living Glengarry. Each specialist group takes turns designing and leading programming for adults with developmental disabilities. This shifts students from participants to leaders. “We are very humbled and honoured to have been selected,” said Lindsey Howes. “It has been so rewarding to see students explore new skills. They have embraced learning from community members and connecting with some fabulous folks at Community Living Glengarry.” The Red Apple Awards were bestowed by CEO Ron Ferguson. Sheila MacIntyre, Secondary Student Success Teacher, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, was recognized for her leadership in promoting inclusion, student voice, and success. Trustee David McDonald was saluted for his long-term commitment to the UCDSB.
