Cornwall City Council has unanimously approved an extension of medical leave for Councillor Syd Gardiner. The long-time member, who began a 20-week leave July 14, will now remain on leave until November 30, due to a longer-than-expected recovery.
At a recent council meeting, Councillor Claude McIntosh shared an update after visiting Gardiner. “He’s in good spirits. He even complained about the food,” McIntosh said with a chuckle.
Councillor Denis Sabourin emphasized that Gardiner remains engaged despite his absence. “He reads the agendas, watches the meetings on Cogeco, and continues to receive calls from residents about Council business,” said Sabourin.
Mayor Justin Towndale also offered well wishes, noting that Gardiner may have been watching the meeting live. “We wish him all the best in his recovery. It sounds like it’s positive news.”
The resolution was introduced by Sabourin, seconded by McIntosh, and passed unanimously. Under provincial legislation, any absence longer than three months must be approved by Council.
