Actually, it was a sunny, balmy, late October early morning but the next three days promised heavy wind and rain. Soon the now radiant trees would become dark skeletons, then ghostly white with winter’s inevitable gift.
Because of our self-imposed boycott of January 20, 2025, when “you know who” took office, we had decided to stay out of his fifty and remain in our ten until he was gone. However, the seductive charms of the Adirondacks called. My reasoning was this: the Adirondack Mountains are geologically nothing but an outlier of our Canadian Shield, so let’s take a drive there today. Our mutual vote was a unanimous “Yes! Let’s head for the Adirondacks!”
This area has much to offer. If you are looking for a place situated on a pristine river, I have a suggestion. Need a store where you can get a trail map? I know of just the place. Would you enjoy being part of a friendly, informal gathering? If local history is your thing, I know of a village that has an interesting collection of accumulated ephemera. Road trips include washroom breaks. I can recommend one that is clean, always accessible, almost as large as your kitchen and won’t make you purchase something to access. Some places gouge the visitor with exorbitant parking fees for very limited availability. The difference between tourists and travelers is that the former look for kitsch and tchotchkes that are made in China. The latter wants items that are tasteful and of local significance and origin. Looking for a place that has a recognizable, genuine landmark of significance?
Have I covered all your travelling needs? I know of just the hamlet that will meet all the above criteria. Since most of the readers of my “Dances With Words” of the Cornwall Seaway News would use the Seaway International Bridge to take a drive to Wanakena, my recommended destination, here’s the easiest route to follow.: NY 37 to Massena – NY 56 through Potsdam to Sevey – NY 3 through Cranberry Lake. Turn left at the sign to Wanakena. If you come to Benson Mines, Star Lake, Chicago or Los Angeles, make a U turn and go back to the sign that tells you to turn right to get to Wanakena. When you do get to Wanakena, start your exploration at Otto’s Abode general store, 6 Hamele St. Tell Nolan Fedorow and his wife Hannah, “Nick sent me.”
