The Editor,
Mark Carney’s liberal budget squeaked through with a mere two-vote margin.
I stand firmly opposed to this austerity budget, which threatens to eliminate 40,000 public sector jobs while funneling billions into military spending.
This right-wing conservative agenda not only undermines our public services but also inflicts severe cuts to immigration policies, unjustly scapegoating international students in the process.
Under this budget, the 2025 plan promises a shocking reduction in admission targets, slashing the quota for new temporary resident admissions from 673,650 in 2025 to just 385,000 in 2026. I would have vehemently opposed Mark Carney’s budget. Furthermore, the immigration levels plan for 2026-2028 keeps permanent resident admission targets at a disappointing 380,000 per year, down from 395,000 in 2025. Equally troubling is the misguided reliance on the private sector to address the housing crisis.
Developers often prioritize projects that maximize profit margins, leaving the urgent need for affordable housing for middle- and low-income families unaddressed.
In fact, the influence of developers and real estate interests often stifles much-needed regulations that could enhance tenant affordability, such as rent control measures.
Sadly, the NDP, as a political entity, was not in a financial position to challenge this budget effectively.
It raises serious questions about why the Poilievre opposition worked to ensure that a sufficient number of Conservative MPs abstained from voting.
