The Swinging B’s Modern Square Dance Club welcomed dancers in tartans and kilts for a special themed afternoon while also saluting club caller Don Moger for 50 years of modern square dance calling.
The “Tartans & Kilts Dance” filled the basement hall of Knox-St. Paul’s United Church on 12th Street East with lively music and fast-moving squares.
Coordinator Iris Swerdfeger said the celebration honoured Moger’s long reach in the modern square dance world. “Don Moger has been calling for 50 years and Don Moger is an international caller. He calls all over the world,” she said, noting he is based in Montreal and regularly calls in Cornwall.
Swerdfeger explained modern square dancing relies on eight dancers responding in real time as the caller strings moves together. The Swinging B’s, Cornwall’s only modern square dance club, has about 40 members from young adults up to 93.
Moger said the tribute was a surprise. “It’s terrific…I hope I keep going. I hope I get to 60,” he said. Asked what makes a dance work, he smiled: “Fun, fun, fun.”
