A $49,900 Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) has funded a St. Lawrence River Institute pilot program helping local students explore environmental careers. Staff and partners gathered in Cornwall to celebrate the initiative, which used the Institute’s facilities, scientists, and partner network to support upper-year secondary students interested in “blue economy” jobs in the water sector.
“It is critical that youth get the hands-on learning experiences needed to thrive in their future careers,”said Nolan Quinn, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry.
The pilot, delivered with the SOI Foundation’s Blue Futures Pathways program and Water Canada’s Downstream networking events, offered learning materials, soft skills training and chances to meet industry professionals. Organizers say the mix of experiential learning and mentoring helped students regain opportunities lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This Seed Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation offered a valuable opportunity to help secondary school students better prepare for the future,” said River Institute Executive Director Dr. Jeff Ridal.
