Bereaved Families of Ontario – South Eastern Region (BFO-SER) has brought its holiday “memory tree” back to the Benson Centre, offering residents a way to remember loved ones. Volunteers will return this December 20 and 21 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
For a $5 donation, visitors can write the name of a relative, friend or pet on a slip of paper, place it inside an ornament and hang it on the tree. “You have a lot of people who make it part of their holiday tradition to come commemorate a loved one,” said board member Lisanne McCullough.
McCullough said the memory tree is both one of BFO-SER’s biggest fundraisers and an important gathering point for people living with loss. “The holidays are always a particularly difficult time,” she said. “It’s nice that we can come together as a community.”
With the memory tree standing at the Benson Centre throughout December, BFO-SER hopes residents will pause, remember, and help sustain grief supports close to home. Each ornament hung represents a story of loss but also a community willing to walk beside those who carry it.
