Guess what’s coming. I hear your answer was “Christmas!” Wow! You’re smart, really smart. You’re right on top of things!
Let’s take a look at the widely different reactions to the coming of Christmas. The earliest to react are the mega retail corporations. On Boxing Day, December 26, 2024 they reacted by examining their store shelves, determining which ones were bare and which ones had lots of leftovers. The products that had been on the bare shelves were great sellers, deserving of consideration to be produced in additional quantities. Re-orders for some, cancellations for others. Good news for some of the manufacturers in China, India and Bangladesh, bad news for others.
Busy at the same time are the thrifty gift givers. They peruse the shelves that bear the 75% OFF! signs. Those items will be grabbed up and stored away in the attic or basement, to eventually be gift wrapped in early December, and presented to recipients who are pleased with whatever they receive.
Next are those who stock the shelves of the mega retailers. They get to work after attending the 11th hour of the11th day of the 11th month ceremonies. The wreaths and crosses are taken down and put into storage. As they toil, they are serenaded by the sounds of jingle bells, hearty ho, ho, ho and rump a tum tum. Onto the shelves go the things that hope to be wrapped with care and put under the evergreen with the angel on top.
The very next morning, everything is in readiness for the gift giver who all summer was making a shopping list and checking it twice to see who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. The wise shopper waits for the Black Friday up to 75% off sales.
Sunday November 30, 2025 is when the Christian religious zealots start their Advent activities. They are the ones who try to capitalize on every commercial feast day. Chants, purple vestments and something called the Advent wreath are used to motivate the followers for the big day, December 25.
It’s when the shops have finally shut their doors that the last two anticipators of Christmas swing into action. The next to last is the one who goes on-line to e-mail a personalized gift card to each of their nearest and dearest.
Who’s last? “It’s Feetlebaum!”, the dark horse winner made famous in Spike Jones narration of a hotly contested horse race. He just whips a crisp twenty out of his wallet and thrusts it into the appreciative recipient’s palm, accompanied by a hearty “Ho, ho, ho!”
