Snowshoeing has always been a popular winter sport. But in recent years, snowshoe racing has been gaining momentum.
Serious racers converge every year on the Summerstown Trails, where the 12th annual Dion race will be held February 7, as part of the Dion Canadian Snowshoe Series, sanctioned by Snowshoe Canada.
Snowshoe racing is a lot more difficult than hiking, for obvious reasons. In addition to having to deal with a snowy track, racers are also burdened by snowshoes.
In fact, you can burn as many as 400 to 1,000 calories per hour, depending on factors like your weight and the intensity of the activity. But unlike high-impact activities such as running, snowshoeing is gentle on the joints.
The Summerstown track takes place on packed rolling terrain and a fast beautiful tree-covered course.
The race will take place with or without snow.
Points will be awarded for each race in the Dion Series with the series champions being crowned at the final event in the series.
