About 100 visitors gathered recently 6 at the Saunders Hydro Dam Visitor Centre in Cornwall for the Akwesasne Artisan Event, hosted by the Native North American Travelling College (NNATC) and Ontario Power Generation. The free event featured local artists, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
“In partnership with OPG, we’re hosting an artisan event to give people an opportunity to experience our artists from Akwesasne and to give exposure to those artists,” said cultural educator Shayne Oke of NNATC.
Fellow cultural educator Jake Cook said the day helped “shed a little bit of light on who we are as Haudenosaunee people” and put their crafts in the spotlight.
Demonstrations included basket-making and loom beading, with vendors offering paintings, beadwork, jewelry, leatherwork, and more.
“Not only is it beautiful to look at all these art pieces, they are also part of a living culture, not solely an art piece,” Oke added.
“It’s all about partnership,” said OPG corporate relations officer Matt Mulvihill, noting the utility’s long-standing relationship with NNATC in bringing cultural teachings and community events to the visitor centre.
