December 28, I was doing my grocery run at Food Basics East End on Second Street. I was almost finished when I suddenly realized a ring was missing from my finger. The shock hit me instantly. I tried to stay calm and retraced my steps, clinging to the tiniest hope that I might still find it. After several anxious, unproductive minutes, I told myself that maybe it simply wasn’t my lucky day. I headed to the cashier to pay. When my turn came, I said, “I lost my ring…” Before I could even finish the sentence, she reached toward the machine, picked up a ring resting on top of it, and handed it to me. Was I surprised, absolutely. Was I grateful? Beyond words. She explained that an off-duty employee, who had been doing her own shopping, found the ring and passed it to her for safekeeping. The saying “A hero doesn’t always wear a cape” is used often, but that day it proved true. My hero was an ordinary housewife with an extraordinary heart. I only wish I had gotten her name, and the cashier’s name as well. To both of them: thank you, thank you. May the store continue to thrive, and may every worker there enjoy a prosperous New Year.
