An unattended space heater has been determined to be the cause of a January 13 fire that caused extensive damage to a garage in the 300 block of 13th Street in Cornwall.
The Cornwall Fire Services Fire Prevention Division has concluded the blaze was sparked by a space heater that had been left plugged in and operating unattended.
“Space heaters can be useful in cold weather, but they pose a serious fire risk when left operating without supervision,” said Deputy CAO/Fire Chief Matthew Stephenson. “We strongly encourage all residents to turn off and unplug space heaters when leaving the room or the home. A few simple precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of tragedies like this.” A total of 11 firefighters and three apparatus were dispatched to the scene. Fire crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control and prevent extension to nearby structures. Despite their efforts, the garage sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported.
Cornwall Fire Services reminds residents to follow safe heating practices, ensure working smoke alarms, and remain vigilant when using electrical appliances.
