The Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District is expressing heartfelt thanks to Karla Burke, her spouse Steve, and brother Brent for organizing the Annual June Arthur Memorial Dart Tournament, which raised $1,161.50 in support of local programs and services.
Held at the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Club in Cornwall, the event featured a blind draw tournament with 16 teams of four players each, raffle prizes, and a 50/50 draw. “The benefit was for my mom,” said Karla Burke. “She passed away two years ago this coming June. We held the first tournament last January, and now we’re making it an annual event.”
Karla’s mother, June Arthur, was a familiar face in the local dart community. “She loved playing darts,” Karla recalled. “She enjoyed the socialization, being around people. That was her thing.” The decision to support the Alzheimer Society was personal. “She had dementia,” Karla explained. “That’s why we chose this organization. They help people like her and their families through such a difficult time.”
This year’s tournament exceeded expectations, with more participants than the inaugural event. “It was shocking – in a good way,” Karla laughed. “The community was very generous. We had a raffle table, and businesses and individuals donated so many items. We really appreciate their support.”
The Alzheimer Society of Cornwall & District is a vital community-based organization offering education, counselling, and resources to individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, as well as their care partners. Events like this not only raise essential funds but also reduce stigma and bring people together in support of a cause that touches many families. As for next year? Karla confirms: “We’ll be doing it again.”
