February 1 is Big Mac Day – a local tradition that honours the late Cecil and Loraine Robertson, who opened Cornwall’s first McDonald’s restaurant. What began as a family’s way to remember Cecil has grown into a local fundraiser supporting the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC).
“It’s technically our third Big Mac Day,” explained Matt Marchand, Market Supervisor. “The Robertson family used to gather each February 1st to eat Big Macs in his memory. Now, we’ve turned it into a community-wide event with proceeds going to a cause close to our hearts.” McDonald’s restaurants in Cornwall and Lancaster will offer Big Macs and extra value meals at a reduced price, with part of the proceeds donated to the Children’s Treatment Centre, a community-funded agency offering free services to children affected by abuse.
“Big Mac Day is something that’s just within our market,” said Ally Morris, Regional Market People Lead. “It’s personal for us – we know the families, we’ve seen the impact, and it feels good to give back.”
Last year’s event raised $1,238 from Big Mac sales alone. “Our goal is to hit 3,000 Big Macs this year,” said franchisee Kyle Drake. “It’s our way of supporting an agency doing essential work.” CTC Board member Todd Lalonde expressed his gratitude: “We’re blessed to have continued support from people like Kyle and the entire McDonald’s team. Events like this are vital because our Centre receives no government funding. It’s all community-driven.”
There will be live music, including Nicholas Séguin of the The Chesterfields.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Children’s Treatment Centre.
