Cornwall City Council has approved $117,153 in funding through the 2026 Municipal Grants Program, following recommendations from the Municipal Grants Review Committee. Eighteen applications were received during the October intake period. The committee approved ten applicants: eight under Program 1 (Financial and In-Kind Assistance) and two under Program 2 (Multi-Government Funding Support). Under Program 2, the Seaway Senior Citizens Club and Centre Charles-Émile Claude were each awarded $30,000. These contributions allow both organizations to qualify for upper-level government funding. Program 1 recipients include the 3rd Cornwall Scouts, Canadian Mental Health Association Champlain East, Cornwall Youth Music Collective, and the Social Development Council of Cornwall, each receiving $10,000. The Cornwall & Area Chamber of Commerce received $7,000, United Way Centraide Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry was granted $6,153, the Hub for Beyond 21 Foundation received $2,500, and the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall & District was awarded $1,500. Councillor Sarah Good raised a question about support of “signature events” such as Pride and the Akwesasne Pow Wow. She noted that while these events have received support in the past, they are not formally part of the Municipal Grants Program. City staff clarified that signature events are currently handled through separate in-kind contributions of up to $10,000, with amounts exceeding that billed to the event organizers.
