South Stormont Fire and Rescue was recently awarded a provincial grant of $65,180 to support cancer prevention efforts for the fire service and equipment to safely respond to lithium-ion battery emergencies. “This funding is necessary for the protection of our firefighters,” said South Stormont Fire Chief, Morris Lamer. “Evidence shows a direct link to various cancers associated with fire response activities, and the improved decontamination this funding will support will serve our team well to mitigate those concerns.” The money will be used for shower facilities at Station 3 (Newington), two washing machines at Station 2 (Ingleside), bunker gear storage racks, decontamination soap and lithium-Ion battery response equipment. “With municipalities navigating financial pressures, it is funding like the Fire Protection Grant that helps us tackle the needs of our fire service,” said Mayor Bryan McGillis.
