In 2024-2025, 61% of Upper Canada District School Board Grade 3 students and 43% of Grade 6 students met or exceeded the provincial standard in EQAO testing.
Now UCDSB is bringing dinosaurs, artificial intelligence, and escape room-style challenges into the classroom to boost math and writing skills for EQAO-aged students.
Launched in December, Dino Dig Disaster for Grade 3 and AI Gone Rogue for Grade 6 combine video storytelling, problem-solving, and writing tasks to engage students in math learning aligned with the Ontario curriculum.
“Our approach to math is intentional and student-centered,” said Rob Scott, Vice-Principal of Curriculum and Assessment. “We wanted to create something fun and interactive that mirrors EQAO-style thinking while being easy for teachers to use.”
The activities include math challenges supported by writing prompts and interactive videos, encouraging students to explore problem-solving strategies and real-world applications.
Designed for classroom use without additional support, the programs have already reached Grades 3 and 6, with more in development for Grades 2, 4, and 5.
“EQAO is one measure of student learning,” Scott added. “Our goal is to support well-rounded math development… for future learning and real-life problem solving.”
