Local patients could see significantly shorter wait times for diagnostic imaging and surgeries following a new provincial investment of more than $1.8 million into hospitals serving Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. The announcement, made February 19, includes major new funding that will substantially expand CT capacity at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH). MPP Nolan Quinn said the investment will help families receive “faster, more reliable access to the care they need,” noting that both CCH and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) will see increases in imaging and surgical activity. While the provincial release highlighted general funding totals, new operational details provided by CCH show the scope of the expansion. The hospital currently operates 3,466 funded CT hours per year, averaging about 10 hours of service per day. The new funding adds 2,800 additional hours, raising total annual capacity to 6,266 hours, or roughly 18 hours of available CT time daily. If CCH is able to staff those expanded hours consistently, officials estimate the hospital will be able to complete approximately 1,500 more CT tests per year. This would be a significant boost that directly targets the bottlenecks patients frequently face in diagnostic imaging.
“This funding directly supports Cornwall Community Hospital’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan,” said Jeanette Despatie, CCH President and CEO. “By increasing surgical activity and CT imaging hours, we are improving timely access to care for local patients while supporting a more integrated and sustainable health system.” CCH will receive $701,500 for expanded CT services and $961,200 for increased surgical capacity. WDMH will receive $59,250 for CT services and $134,900 to perform additional surgeries.
