Last month, I was proud to announce the single largest investment that the Government of Ontario has ever made in the City of Cornwall. With $30 million in funding, our government is supporting the expansion and modernization of the City’s water infrastructure, strengthening the foundation for Cornwall’s continued growth and prosperity. This investment will fund the construction of a secondary intake to bring raw water from the St. Lawrence into the City’s water purification plant. Cornwall’s current intake which was built in 1955 is approaching the end of its service life, making this project both essential and forward-thinking. Adding a second intake will also improve system performance and provide greater reliability by ensuring consistent water service even if a blockage, equipment failure, or severe weather event impacts the original intake. The funding is being delivered through Ontario’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program – Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS), and will ensure that Cornwall has the core infrastructure required to continue supporting residents, attract new business and enable new housing developments. Reliable access to clean drinking water is essential to daily life and to the long-term success of any growing community. That’s why this strategic investment from our government is important and will allow the City of Cornwall to plan and build into the future with confidence. This announcement is also part of a larger, province-wide effort to strengthen infrastructure across Ontario. Through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, now expanded to $4 billion and part of our ambitious $220 billion capital plan, our government is supporting vital projects that keep communities like Cornwall growing and thriving. Since 2024, the program has made approximately 800,000 new homes possible by supporting critical infrastructure projects such as water systems, roads and other essential services. Through this historic $30 million investment, our government is laying important groundwork for Cornwall’s future by supporting local jobs and strengthening our capacity for new housing and development.
