Cornwall welcomed athletes from across Ontario as the 48th Annual Ontario Broomball Championships took over the Benson Centre from March 20 to 22. The three-day tournament featured more than 40 teams competing across multiple divisions, drawing an estimated 800 players to the city.
For the first time, all games were held under one roof, using the Benson Centre’s three ice pads. “The three pads are perfect,” said host committee chair Ellen MacNaughton. “Last year, we used two in one location and had to drive to another. This is perfect.” Teams travelled from as far as Windsor, with a double knockout format ensuring competitive play throughout the weekend. MacNaughton said the event has started strong, with multiple games already completed on opening day.
Beyond the competition, MacNaughton highlighted the community atmosphere surrounding the sport. “It’s one big family from all across the province,” she said. “It’s a great sport. It’s affordable, you can run, and anyone can play.”
With high-calibre competition throughout the weekend, the tournament featured the Ottawa Nationals, reigning Canadian champions, in the Elite Men’s division. Several players from the Helicopter team that won the 2024 World Championship in France also competed across multiple teams.
The Young Bucks won gold, Rough Edge silver, and Valley Lakers bronze.
