The annual Easter egg hunt was hosted by the Friends of the Glengarry Trails in Alexandria. Families brought their baskets to follow the trail in the woods and find chocolate eggs along the way.
Each year since 2020, Pat Larocque has organized the event. She wanted to provide a chance for children to have some outdoor recreation when so many activities were limited during the pandemic, the Trails provided the perfect spot for fun while maintaining a distance for health reasons. Six years later, Larocque and her eight volunteers continue to stage the activity. Her husband, Yvon Ranger, plays a key role in maintaining the trails, mowing grass and keeping pathways open and safe. As well, three other members of the Friends of the Glengarry Trails decorated the woods with seasonal props, such as colourful plastic eggs and Happy Easter banners.
Larocque said their group realized that local businesses already receive so many requests for financial support that the Glengarry Trails board members decided to fund the event themselves.
The Friends of the Glengarry Trails is a not-for-profit organization that was founded to create recreational trails that could be accessed throughout the year. Custom-made, beautifully illustrated, seasonal stories are on display for hikers to enjoy as they start their journey at the main trailhead on Lochiel Street West in Alexandria. The current story on display is titled, “Why the Easter Bunny Brings Eggs.”
Membership fees support the maintenance of the wooden lookout, the boardwalk and the equipment. Yearly individual membership is $20 and membership for the whole family is $35. Details can be found at www.glengarrytrails.com
