Award-winning singer-songwriter Kaia Kater will take the stage at the Upper Canada Playhouse April 11 at 7 p.m. as part of the St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage concert series, with special guest Mimi Dominique opening the evening.
Kater, a Montreal-born Grenadian-Canadian artist, recently earned the 2025 JUNO Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year for her latest release, Strange Medicine. Known for her expressive vocals and intricate banjo work, she blends musical influences from Québec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia-reflecting both her heritage and artistic journey. Since releasing her debut EP Old Soul in 2013 shortly after high school, Kater has built an international reputation through a series of acclaimed albums, including Sorrow Bound, Nine Pin, Grenades, and Strange Medicine. Her work often explores themes of identity, history, and resilience, drawing in part on her father’s experience as a refugee from Grenada. Her latest album expands her sound with cinematic arrangements and collaborations with notable artists, while continuing to highlight stories of women and marginalized communities.
Beyond her recording career, Kater has also made a mark in film and television. She received a Canadian Screen Award for her work on The Porter and has contributed original music to other productions, further demonstrating her versatility as a composer and storyteller. Opening the show, Dominique brings her own emerging voice to the stage. The Toronto-based artist has performed widely across Canada and is a graduate of Seneca College’s songwriting and performance program. Tickets are available through the St. Lawrence Acoustic Stage website.
