Cornwall hosted championship-level girls’ hockey for the first time in more than a decade as the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association Eastern League Championships returned to the city March 28 and 29.
Held at the Benson Centre and Cornwall Civic Complex, the event brought together 84 teams from across Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Valley. With an estimated 1,600 players, plus families and supporters, the tournament filled rinks, hotels, and local businesses over the two-day competition.
“It’s been over a decade since we had any championship day hosted here in Cornwall,” said Mike Turcotte, President of the Cornwall Girls Hockey Association and event organizer. “We got the privilege to host it this year.”
All games were championship matchups, with teams qualifying through league play for a single-game final to determine gold or silver standings. The schedule spanned multiple divisions and rinks, creating a steady flow of action and spectators throughout the weekend. Turcotte said the scale of the event required extensive coordination from volunteers and association members. “It’s just organizing presentations, medals, banners-there’s a whole team of us,” he said. “It gets to showcase Cornwall… especially with the updates at the Benson Centre. It’s a good thing.”
Local participation was strong, with Cornwall represented by multiple teams across divisions, including house league entries at U11, U13, U15, and U18, along with a competitive U11A team. More inside.
