A quilting showcase was hosted at the Cornwall Square as part of International Quilting Day, drawing visitors to the centre court for six hours of displays and live demonstrations.
Organized by the Cornwall Quilters Guild, the event highlighted both traditional and modern quilting techniques. Attendees observed hand sewing, machine work, and embroidery, while speaking directly with members about the craft. “We’re here to promote our skills and encourage more people to get involved and learn quilting,” said chair Cathy Millar. Publicity coordinator Lynda Godin noted a growing interest among younger generations. “There’s a resurgence of hands-on crafts like sewing and macramé, and quilting is a great way to learn new skills and meet people,” she said.
Founded in 1992, the guild has about 70 members and meets monthly, offering workshops, guest speakers, and beginner-friendly instruction. “If you can sew a straight stitch, you can be a quilter,” added Godin. Millar said the event offered a rare chance to see local talent. “People are surprised by the work. We have a lot of talented quilters in this community.”
