The Revive Church in Alexandria held its Red Ribbon food drive on Good Friday, to support the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s food bank.
This year, 350 bags of non-perishable food items were collected by the volunteers. The bags of food were then transported to Sacré Coeur Church in Alexandria, where volunteers sorted the donations destined for the food bank that helps, on average, 40 families each week. During Christmas, many groups are busy with food collection initiatives. Schools, local grocery stores and events actively promote gathering non-perishable food items to help families, however, the need doesn’t end at Christmas. Families and individuals continue, throughout the year, to find it challenging to afford to put healthy meals on their tables. And with costs rising every week on many items at the grocery stores, the challenge continues to grow.
Former Pastor of the Revive Church, Bruce MacCallum, spearheaded the idea in 2021 to hand out bags the week leading up to Easter. Families received an information letter, a bag for non-perishable food donations and a red ribbon to tie in a visible place so that food collectors would know they should stop to pick up a filled bag. This year, under the leadership of organizer, Jennifer Auer, the group from Revive Church gathered at their place of worship on Kincardine Street, which is shared with the United Church, Good Friday for a prayer, words of encouragement and thanks to the volunteers.
