A new exhibition at the Cline House Gallery is showcasing the forest landscapes of Winchester-based oil painter Carrie Keller. Titled Forest Muse, the solo exhibit features a series of nature-inspired paintings that draw on Keller’s experiences walking through forests and observing the natural landscape.
The exhibition runs until April 11, presenting a collection of oil paintings focused on trees, foliage, and shifting light in wooded environments. She explained that the forest environment has long been a place where she feels most comfortable creatively. “I’m very happy in the forest,” Keller said. To capture the scenes that later become paintings, Keller typically photographs locations during her walks. She then works from those images in the studio, simplifying the scene and emphasizing the feeling of the moment rather than reproducing every detail. “I work from photos, so by taking the photos and printing them out right away and getting the feeling that I had while I was there,” she said. Lighting also plays an important role. Keller often looks for moments when natural light interacts with leaves, rain, or wind to create movement within the scene. “It’s usually looking for the moment where the light is coming and working with the leaves,” she said. “It was raining and the wind was moving, so I get that movement and the glistening on the leaves a little bit.” Her life and career have taken her to many places. Born in California and raised in Windsor, Keller served in the Canadian military as a cook and later spent 20 years living in Florida, where she worked on murals and other commissioned pieces. Today she lives in Winchester with her husband and remains active in the local arts community. Keller said exhibiting at the Cline House Gallery is particularly meaningful. “I’m thrilled,” she said. “I love these people. I love the town. I’m very well treated, which is marvelous.”
