The Seaway Valley Theatre Company hosted its March Break Theatre Workshops, offering a full-day program for youth.
The camp welcomed 22 participants between the ages of eight and 12, with a focus on building confidence through acting, movement, and creative collaboration. Activities ranged from character development and voice work to group exercises and hands-on projects, all designed to introduce young performers to the fundamentals of theatre.
Camp director Kadence Gault, who previously participated in the program, said the experience can be transformative. “It was a safe space for everybody… I finally felt accepted and had a place to be myself,” she said, noting she has been involved with the company for about eight years.
The smaller group size allowed for more individualized attention, helping participants stay engaged through a variety of activities. “We try and do a variety of different things… just having that variety keeps everyone focused,” Gault added.
Throughout the week, campers created their own characters, designed masks, and worked together to develop short skits to present at the end of the week.
Co-director Austin Taylor said the workshops often serve as a first introduction to theatre. “It’s awesome to give the kids their first look into theatre… it’s a great opportunity that I very much enjoy,” he said.
