Young skateboarders and families gathered at the Akwesasne Skatepark for the annual Akwesasne Girls Skate Day, a community event celebrating girls in skateboarding.
Hosted by Melani Arquette alongside Kemptville skateboarder Ashlynn Barrett Tucker, the sunny afternoon welcomed participants of all ages and skill levels. Activities included skate lessons, games, a mini ramp contest, prize giveaways, tie-dye activities with Tihanna Benedict, music by DJ Crystal Stehlin, photography portraits by Jaiden Mitchell, and a performance by Feryn King.
“Skateboarding gives little girls the chance to discover how strong, brave, and capable they truly are,” said King. “It teaches them that falling is not failure – it is part of learning, growing, and getting back up even stronger.”
King added that skateboarding allows girls to “be bold, powerful, adventurous, and completely themselves.”
Organizers thanked Akwesasne Child & Family Services for sponsoring the event and MCA Economic Development for helping coordinate the day’s activities.
