The Editor,
If you’re running for a seat on council in Cornwall, the expectation should be simple: bring new ideas, or don’t run.
For years, decades, in some cases, we’ve had members sitting around the council table who have never once brought forward a meaningful “new business” motion. Not one. Their role has been reduced to little more than raising a hand to approve whatever is placed in front of them by administration.
And now residents are being told to accept the consequences: a staggering, long-term pattern of 6 per cent tax increases.
This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of a council culture that has grown far too comfortable with passivity. When elected officials fail to lead, fail to challenge, and fail to contribute ideas, the city drifts and taxpayers pay the price.
Council is not supposed to be a rubber stamp. It’s supposed to be a place where ideas are debated, where priorities are set, and where leadership is demonstrated.
After more than 10 years in a seat, if you haven’t brought forward a single new idea, it’s fair to ask: Why are you still there?
The people of Cornwall deserve better. They deserve representatives who are willing to think, to act, and to lead.
If you want to run for council, come prepared to do the job or step aside for someone who will.
