Senator Bernadette Clement welcomed Cornwall Police Chief Shawna Spowart to the Senate in Ottawa earlier this month, recognizing her leadership and longstanding contributions to the community.
Clement highlighted Spowart’s historic role as the first woman to serve as Chief of Police in Cornwall, noting the visit also included Addison Spowart-Moriarty, Anita Moriarty, and Lori Greer. “We had a very productive conversation about communities, maintaining our relationships, safety, and the Senate’s role,” Clement said, adding she has “a deep respect for her, her career, and all that she has contributed to our community.” Spowart said, “It was incredible, a pretty special experience to be able to visit with her there.” It was particularly significant to share the moment with her daughter. “A young girl watching the first Black female mayor and the first female chief in the same room together in the Senate.”
The visit recognized Spowart’s receipt of the King Charles III Coronation Medal, awarded by the Province of Ontario following her nomination by Premier Doug Ford. “I was quite shocked and truly, truly honoured.” The medal had initially been mailed to her home, and she was not included in the presentation ceremonies in 2025. Plans for a presentation at the Senate were delayed due to family circumstances. Spowart said the medal’s most meaningful moment came not at a formal ceremony, but at home. “On Christmas Eve, my daughter gave a speech and presented it to me, a really special moment.” She said the honour carried both professional and personal significance, noting her English-born grandmother held the monarchy in high regard. Spowart also expressed gratitude to Clement for the Senate recognition. “I have great admiration and respect for Senator Clement. It was really meaningful to me.”
