SDG Counties Transportation department is moving into its warm weather maintenance projects across the townships.
Pavement markings
SDG Counties roads will be receiving fresh centreline pavement markings in 2026. Provincial Road Markings Inc., based in Guelph, Ontario, will be completing the road marking project for a total of $565,175. The Counties’ portion of the cost for centreline marking on its roads is $522,992.
The centreline pavement marking is completed annually as part of SDG Counties’ roads maintenance. This is a joint tender with local municipalities for a one-year agreement that could be extended to a total of four years to save costs over the term. The maintenance and marking of edge lines on county roads is split over two years.
Roadside weed spraying
In another joint tender with local municipalities, SDG Counties will be supervising the roadside weed spraying at priority areas where weeds are the most invasive. Wagar & Corput Weed Control Inc. is a local company that submitted a tender for just over $50,000 to complete the weed spraying along roads. This covers the cost for equipment and labour, with the cost of the herbicide to be added once the actual quantities used are known. Wagar & Corput is regulated by the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change and are licensed and certified for pest management using herbicides, fungicides and insecticides.
The townships will be sharing the costs for the roadside weed spraying, with portions ranging from $1,625 to $5,833. SDG Counties coordinates the project on behalf of the Townships, with each Township notifying SDG Transportation Services where they would like roadside weed spraying to take place. For instance, while all Townships have the option, to date, only North Glengarry has chosen to include weed spraying around guardrails in 2026. Residents can request no weed spraying on their roadside frontage by visiting the SDG Counties website at https://ift.tt/pAzWdug to mark the location. As well, displaying signs saying, “No Spray” on the property serve as a reminder for the contractor when the work is taking place. To date, 25 locations have been earmarked not to receive roadside spraying.
New mowers
SDG Counties will be purchasing four new disc mowers from Colvoy Enterprises 2012 Ltd. for just over $129,000. As part of SDG Counties’ equipment replacement program, the currently owned disc mowers are at the end of their three-year service life. A disc mower is a tractor attachment with rotating discs holding free-swinging knives that can cut through dense grass and weeds without getting clogged. These mowers allow for higher speeds to reduce labour time completing roadside maintenance. SDG Counties staff expect to take possession of the new mowers in June.
