Margaret Towndale has been recognized by the Cornwall Community Hospital for an extraordinary milestone, marking 50 years of service as a member of its Auxiliary, a volunteer group that has long supported patient care and hospital services.
Margaret began volunteering in 1976 and reflected on the experience with gratitude. “I really enjoy volunteering for the hospital, and it has been time very well spent,” she said.
The hospital’s Auxiliary, with roots dating back to 1949, is a volunteer-driven organization that plays an important behind-the-scenes role.
For example, members assist visitors at information desks, help in waiting areas, and operate the hospital’s gift shop, while also contributing to a welcoming environment for patients and staff. Beyond daily support, the Auxiliary raises funds through events, ticket sales, and gift shop proceeds going toward medical equipment and hospital programs that directly benefit the community.
News of Towndale’s milestone drew widespread praise after a social media post shared by her son, Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale. Community leaders and residents alike highlighted her decades of dedication and impact.
“Congratulations Margaret, such amazing dedication!” wrote South Stormont Councillor Jennifer MacIsaac. “What a wonderful testimony to a great woman who is so very dedicated,” added Debbie Fortier.
Others echoed those sentiments, noting both the longevity and the value of her service. “50 years as a volunteer is amazing,” said Terry Muir, while former MPP Jim Brownell wished her “good health and happiness” as she continues to serve.
Messages from local organizations and officials consistently described Towndale’s commitment as well-deserved and impactful. Juliette Labossière called the recognition “well deserved,” adding that the hospital is fortunate to have such a dedicated volunteer, while Lisa Duprau and Denis Sabourin also praised her longstanding contributions.
School principal Kieran Kennedy summed up the sentiment shared by many: “What an accomplishment… your devotion to volunteering is exemplary.”
