After more than three years of planning, fundraising, and community collaboration, the Cornwall Youth Space at Alexander Park is officially open, creating a new outdoor gathering place designed by youth, for youth.
The recent grand opening at the park on Eighth Street East featured a free barbecue, activities, prizes, community partners, and the Alexander Cup 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Fundraiser.
The project was led by the Cornwall Youth Space Committee with support from the Social Development Council of SDGCA, Cornwall Police Service, volunteers, businesses, sponsors, and a youth advisory committee. The goal was to transform the park into a safe and welcoming space where young people can connect, take part in activities, and feel a sense of belonging.
Melanie Boileau, Project Coordinator with the Social Development Council of SDGCA and a member of the Cornwall Youth Space Committee, said seeing the finished space filled with people was an emotional moment.
Boileau said the turnout exceeded expectations, with basketball players arriving early for the tournament and families visiting throughout the day.
“When you do these things, you don’t know what to expect, but I’m overjoyed with how many community members are here,” she said.
