The Cornwall Police Service connected with young cyclists and their families through the return of its annual Bikes & Badges event at the St. Lawrence College parking lot.
The initiative gave children an opportunity to meet local officers while learning safe riding habits. The event featured bicycle inspections, an obstacle course, helmet education, road safety lessons, and giveaways, including bells and safety equipment. Deputy Chief Chad Maxwell said the event is one of the service’s key community outreach initiatives.
“The city is becoming busier, bicycle lanes are busier, there’s more traffic, there’s more people, and with all those things comes a higher risk to young cyclists.” Maxwell said officers volunteered their time because they believe in the importance of helping children ride safely. Cst. Casey McGregor said children learned important skills, including the rules of the road, stopping, turn signals, wearing reflective clothing, and making sure bicycles are safe to ride.
“We always encourage kids to ride with their parents. Their parents can help teach them bike safety and the distances away from curbs and cars,” said McGregor. He said the event also helps create positive connections between children and police. “Their face lights up whenever they get to meet the police officers because sometimes this is the first time they’ve ever met a police officer in person,” said McGregor. “We’re able to bridge that gap and build a friendship with them.” Community partners, including the Stormont Community Optimist Club, Cornwall Transit, and local businesses, also supported the event.
