The Kiwanis Club of Cornwall continued its longstanding support for local children and youth during a May 23 bingo fundraiser at the Cornwall Bingo Centre, one of the club’s biweekly events raising funds for programs across Cornwall and SDG.
“We serve the children of the world, and they start in their own community,” said former president Shirley Wellman, who joined the club in 2002 after working as a teacher and literacy coordinator. “I joined Kiwanis because I care about children.” Wellman said the club has supported initiatives ranging from the Children’s Christmas Fund to cadet programs, including the 325 Cornwall Kiwanis Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The organization also works with school readiness and back-to-school initiatives in partnership with local groups.
“We’re quite invested in helping children in this community and have been for a long time,” she said. Founded in 1927, the Cornwall club will celebrate its 99th anniversary this September. Over the decades, Kiwanis has contributed to numerous community projects, including Cornwall’s first swimming pool and early public health outreach initiatives.
“We feel that what we’re doing, and what we can do, is huge,” said Wellman. “There’s a lot more that needs to be done.”
