The Dunvegan Recreation Association (DRA), along with the Township of North Glengarry, are potentially facing some unexpected repairs to the Dunvegan Hall.
While little information has been made public about the possible structural problems, some upcoming events that were to be held at the recreation centre have been put on hold.
The DRA has not replied to inquiries about the state of the hall, but the municipality responded, “The Township of North Glengarry is aware of reported issues with the flooring at the Dunvegan Community Hall. At this time, we are in the early stages of reviewing the condition of the facility and determining the appropriate next steps. Further, we are committed to ensuring the safety of all users at this facility.”
The statement continues,”As we are in the early stages of the assessment, it would be premature to comment on the full scope of work required or associated costs. Any expenditures beyond the Township’s approved budget would be brought forward to Council for consideration and approval at a public meeting. The Township is working closely with the Dunvegan Recreation Association on this matter, and more information will be shared once available.”
Organizers of the very popular Music and Mayhem, held each year at the centre, were recently notified that the venue could not host the annual event because of “structural issue that will not permit an audience the size of ours to be on the floor.”
The DRA Hall has hosted events such as the Festival of Small Halls, Christmas parties and private events. The facilities are accessible, includes two washrooms, has a Health Unit inspected kitchen, a stage with a top notch sound system, projector and screen.

For over 100 years, the building that now houses the DRA has been the centre of the community’s social life, according to the DRA web site.
Built in 1919 as the new home of the Orange Young Briton Lodge No. 43, it replaced the Lodge’s original meeting place, a log building that was directly across the road. The log structure was dismantled and moved to the Glengarry Pioneer Museum as the main reception area and offices.
In 1974, the building was sold to the Dunvegan Chapter of the Women’s Institute, who later had the second storey removed and the roof replaced.
In 1982, the DRA purchased the hall, which was renovated in 2019 to make it accessible.
