Residential customers of Cornwall Electric will see a 2.13 per cent increase in electricity rates effective July 1, 2026, according to a media release issued by the utility company.
For a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month, the increase will amount to approximately $3.20 monthly.
Jackie Baird, Regional Manager of Cornwall Electric, said the adjustment is intended to support continued system reliability while keeping increases modest.
“Cornwall Electric remains committed to delivering safe and reliable electricity while making decisions that serve the best interests of our customers,” said Baird. “Over the past several years, the utility has maintained fair and reasonable rates in accordance with the terms of its franchise, with adjustments closely aligned to inflation.”
Baird said the increase reflects continued growth in energy usage and will help maintain the long-term sustainability of the local electricity system.
The utility noted that approximately 80 per cent of a customer’s electricity bill reflects the wholesale cost of electricity, which is passed directly through to customers. Cornwall Electric stated that its long-term wholesale agreement with Hydro-Québec has helped keep local rates among the lowest in surrounding areas.
“The long-term wholesale contract in place with Hydro-Québec has played a key role in keeping Cornwall Electric rates among the lowest of surrounding utilities,” said Baird. “This agreement has provided, and continues to provide, rate stability and a reliable supply of electricity for our customers.”
Cornwall Electric also emphasized that nearly all electricity purchased through the agreement is hydroelectric, supporting renewable energy goals and sustainability efforts within the community.
The remaining portion of bills covers local distribution and system maintenance costs.
Cornwall Electric also encouraged customers to use its Equal Payment Plan, conserve energy, and sign up for e-billing.
