The Seaway Valley Community Health Centre has named Helene Shaver its 2026 Volunteer of the Year, recognizing her dedication and ongoing support of community wellness programs across the region.
Shaver was honoured during the organization’s recent Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, where her name was added to the Volunteer Appreciation Wall at the health centre’s main location on Pitt Street in Cornwall. Health promoters Linda Rodgers and Corrie D’Alessio presented the award.
The health centre described Shaver as someone who “leads by example, inspires others to get involved, and creates a welcoming, encouraging environment wherever she volunteers.” The post added that her “kindness, dedication, and genuine care for others help build connection, reduce social isolation, and foster a true sense of belonging in our community.”
Rodgers said Shaver’s impact extends far beyond her regular volunteer duties through the Balance for Life program, a fall-prevention exercise initiative for older adults.
“Everything that I feel about Helen is definitely in that (social media) post. She’s an amazing woman. She’s kind,” Rodgers said. “She’s been providing her Balance for Life classes here in Cornwall for a number of years. She mentors our other new volunteers oftentimes, and she covers off throughout our region.”
Rodgers noted that Shaver regularly volunteers in communities, including Long Sault, Williamstown, and Winchester, whenever coverage is needed.
“She’ll run three classes twice a week. Most volunteers do one class twice a week, so she’s got high, high energy,” Rodgers said. “Her participants love her. We always get such positive feedback about her. She’s a very special lady.”
The Balance for Life program focuses on cardio, strength training, and balance exercises aimed at helping older adults remain independent and active. The program is offered through the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre at several locations throughout Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry.
