Four students from Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry represented the region at the 64th Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF), with Seaway District High School student Maeve Windle bringing home a silver medal.
The national competition in Edmonton featured top student science projects from across Canada. Local representatives earned their spots after being selected at the 49th United Counties Science Fair held in March.
Windle received a silver medal for her project, Greener Foundations: Enhancing Geopolymer Concrete with Wollastonite Carbonation and Photocatalysis. Her research focused on developing a prototype of carbon-capturing concrete by testing whether additives could improve carbon dioxide absorption during curing compared to Ordinary Portland Cement. Her prototype was shown to capture more carbon dioxide while supporting larger loads than traditional cement-based concrete, demonstrating potential for reducing global carbon emissions. Along with her medal, Windle earned entrance scholarships from Mount Allison University ($4,000), the University of Alberta ($2,500), and Western University ($2,000).
Saanvi Anil Uniyal of St. Joseph Secondary Catholic School presented Quantifying Tremor Activities in Parkinson’s Disease Using Motion Sensors. Her project involved developing a low-cost device using motion sensors to measure tremors and identify movement patterns that could help make neurological monitoring more accessible.
Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School students Souhail Agouzoul and Vensun Nguyen presented The Eco Budget-Friendly Prosthetic System. Their project explored a lower-cost prosthetic hand controlled by muscle signals, using electronics and 3D-printed components to improve affordability and accessibility.
“The finalists demonstrated their talent and knowledge during the weeklong event,” said Jason Marshall, Chair of the United Counties Science Fair. “Each of them will have fond memories of their time in Edmonton where they made many new friends and were able to network with like-minded individuals during this opportunity.”
