The Editor,
Expecting a public outcry in the news media following the hounding from public life of our fellow citizen Councillor Sarah Good, I held back. But sadly, an outcry came there none.
Some four years ago, this talented young woman with much to contribute came forward to serve and work for the betterment of our community. She conducted herself honourably and with distinction as a Councillor during her four-year term.
That’s what truly matters above all else. Commendably, earlier this year, she offered her candidacy to help bring a refreshed dynamic approach to the leadership of our city as Mayor. That would have led us on an upward road to progress and renewal.
Tragically, in the face of relentless personal attacks spewed out in the so-called and all powerful social media (anti-social media is more like it), she understandably felt that she could no longer continue to make the heavy personal sacrifice required for public life in these times.
This means not only the immediate loss of a well qualified young woman at a time when such a presence would be so beneficial.
I fear that it may also deprive us of other well qualified people who will have taken note with disgust of what can happen when one seeks to serve our community, and who will decide as a result to abandon the field.
Such a loss may echo throughout the future.
Yes, this hour is one of the most outrageous in this community’s recent history, and one which breaks the heart of those who hope for its better days.
This is especially discouraging for those of us who value the distinctive contribution of women and who long to see the responsibilities of leadership pass, as it should, to a new and inspired generation.
