On August 20, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne welcomed Ontario’s Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response, Jill Dunlop, to CIA Building #3 on Kawehno:ke. The visit included a tour of equipment funded through the 2024-25 Community Emergency Preparedness Grant (CEPG), such as a solar-powered traffic light designed to improve safety during emergencies.
Discussions focused on cross-border emergency coordination, climate resilience, and supporting first responders. Council members highlighted challenges like power outages, severe weather, and recent flooding.
Grand Chief Leonard Lazore said, “Our goal in Akwesasne is to ensure community members remain safe, provide them with the resources and support they need, and strengthen the resilience of our community to face future emergencies.”
Minister Dunlop praised local efforts: “Power outages and floods can happen at any time. It was a pleasure to visit the Mohawk Council in Akwesasne to see how the provincial Community Emergency Preparedness Grant is protecting the community through new solar-powered traffic lights.”
