The inaugural Cornwall Broadview Pickleball Classic officially launched September 26 at the city’s brand-new Broadview Courts, drawing players from across Ontario, Quebec, and beyond for three days of fast-paced action.
Tournament co-director Darren Lalonde called it “Cornwall’s first ever large-scale pickleball tournament,” noting the calibre of play and facilities. “We are extremely lucky to have such a great facility that the city put up with 8 brand new courts,” he said. “We have participants from the U.S., Kingston, Ottawa-and even Alberta.”
The tournament features amateur and open divisions, with men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles. “Most players will play at least 3 or 4 matches and then compete for gold, silver, and bronze,” Lalonde explained. “The open division offers cash prizes up to $500 per team.”
Lalonde, a former college tennis player, said pickleball’s accessibility is a big part of its growth. “The barrier to entry is low, but there’s room to grow competitively,” he said.
The event is powered by Mission Elite Cornwall and sponsored by Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer, RK4 Sports, Cornwall Honda, Deve Hotel, and Best Western.
