On October 9, immigrant women entrepreneurs from Cornwall and SDG gathered for an evening of networking and empowerment hosted by Immigrant Entrepreneur Canada (IEC) at a special MeetUp event at the DEV Hotel & Conference Centre. The night, presented by Riipen and supported by Startup Canada’s Startup Women initiative, featured guest speaker Béatrice Noel, co-founder of Cornwall Connector.
“We are creating this MeetUp to bring the community together,” said Karla Briones, Executive Director of IEC. “So immigrant women who want to start or already run a business can find resources, support, and collaboration.”
The event highlighted the contributions of immigrant-led businesses to the local economy. “Thirty-two percent of small businesses in Canada are immigrant-owned,” noted Briones. “Opening a business in a new country can be a lonely journey. This event helps ensure entrepreneurs feel part of the community.”
Guests connected over refreshments from immigrant-owned Craftsman Café and visited info tables from partners like the Chamber of Commerce and Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. Briones praised the teamwork behind the evening, saying, “It was definitely a team effort to bring this event together.”
