The federal government is promoting liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects as the next wave of “nation-building.” But LNG is a dangerous detour. The LNG Canada project in Kitimat alone adds 14 million tonnes per year of export capacity, doubling Canada’s current LNG output. That means locking us into decades of fossil fuel dependence, unleashing tens of millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, and making it impossible to meet our climate commitments. Instead of protecting Canadians, this expansion exposes us to greater harm, worsening wildfires, air quality, floods, and extreme heat that threaten our health, safety, and economy. Far from building the nation, LNG risks leaving us with stranded assets and higher costs for future generations.
The government has a moral duty to protect Canadians, not fossil fuel profits. There is a better vision on offer. The Elbows Up for Climate initiative, endorsed by more than 200 mayors and councillors across the country, calls for investments that would truly strengthen our communities: a clean national electricity grid, high-speed rail and electric transit, millions of affordable energy-efficient homes, retrofits to cut bills and emissions, and a national disaster resilience strategy. These projects create jobs, lower costs for families, and make us safer.
That’s why I urge our mayor and councillors to sign on to Elbows Up for Climate. Doing so would show residents that our local leaders take climate risks and housing affordability seriously, and that they are prepared to stand with Canadians in demanding a future built on clean energy and resilience.
