The SDSG Greens hosted a public presentation on light pollution at the Cornwall Public Library, featuring guest speaker Bernie Hasselman of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
He discussed the harmful effects of excessive lighting on both human health and the natural world.
“Light pollution affects our circadian rhythms, melatonin production, and sleep,” said Hasselman. “It also disrupts how animals navigate, hide from predators, or hunt.” He encouraged simple mitigation steps like using lower-intensity lights only when needed and choosing warmer color temperatures.
“The big change from incandescent to LED was to save energy. But now, with them being so cheap, we’re using just as much energy, and we’re using 10 times as many lights,” Hasselman added.
Murray Campeau, President of the SDSG Greens, emphasized the importance of local action. “Citizens can improve our nighttime environment. We don’t need overly bright LED streetlights to be effective.”
The event concluded with refreshments and informal discussion, reinforcing the message that meaningful change starts with community awareness and individual responsibility.
