Patients at Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) may notice something different when they arrive for imaging services: CT scans are temporarily being conducted in a mobile trailer located outside the Janet Macdonell Pavilion.
This adjustment comes as the hospital prepares to install a new, state-of-the-art Computed Tomography (CT) scanner, an important advancement for local diagnostic imaging.
The temporary trailer, housed in a heated, weather-protected area, ensures there are no delays or interruptions for scheduled or urgent CT exams during the transition. The hospital expects the new machine to be fully operational by the end of the year.
“This upgrade marks an exciting step forward in the evolution of CCH’s diagnostic imaging services, ensuring our community continues to receive the safest, best, and highest quality care possible, right here at home,” said Jeanette Despatie, President and Chief Executive Officer of CCH.
The new CT machine will replace the current scanner installed in 2014 during the West Wing’s opening. CCH performs nearly 20,000 CT scans annually, making this upgrade critical to meeting increasing demand.
The project is made possible through a partnership between CCH and the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF). A major portion of the funding-$1 million-comes from the estate of local sisters Rhoda and Minnie Bartle.
“In 2023, we shared news with the community that one million dollars from a landmark estate left to our Hospital Foundation… would be set aside for CCH’s next CT purchase. Two years later, we are immensely proud to see this incredible gift come to fruition,” said Amy Gillespie, Executive Director of CCHF.
The hospital emphasizes that such equipment is not covered by government funding, making community support vital.
“Guided by our 2022-2027 Strategic Plan,” added Despatie, “we are committed to enhancing access to care and advancing innovation to meet the growing healthcare needs of our communities.”
