The future of recreation took flight at the Benson Centre as DroneSport hosted its inaugural tournament. Created by local innovator Paul St-Onge of Aero Concept Systems Inc., DroneSport transforms drone flying into an interactive, competitive sport open to all ages.
“We’ve had participants from ages 3 to 78 learning how to fly drones and exploring what’s possible with this new sport,” said St-Onge. DroneSport features drone racing, obstacle challenges, and goal-based games. To ensure inclusivity, the event also included robotics demonstrations, Nerf gun team play, and a special appearance by a search and rescue robot dog. According to St-Onge, the goal is to make DroneSport a national and international phenomenon, starting right here in Cornwall.
Nine-year-old participant Abigail summed it up best: “I’m playing with drones and having fun.”
The Seaway Optimist Club, in partnership with DroneSport Canada, will host a free, family-friendly “Learn to Fly Drones” event in Prescott January 17. Plus, workshops are in the works for 2026, and updates will be posted at www.dronesport.ca.
