It wasn’t the structure that caught my eye, it was what was printed on it: “FOR SALE – DOG HOUSE”, followed by a telephone number.
I made an immediate U-turn, then pulled up beside it so I could study it from a discreet distance, as I was just curious. (Ever since August 8, 2010, I had no need for a dog house. Actually, for both of my dogs, it was always Mi casa, su casa.)
What an odd dog house! Almost eight feet tall, and about eight feet by eight feet each side. Attached to it a wire enclosure that enclosed an area slightly less. The enclosure had a full height gate made of the same material. Nice vinyl siding on two sides, just particle board on the other. I suspect that at one time this dog house was attached to a people house.
Question: Why was this dog house for sale?
To me, the obvious answer was that the dog had died. Another possibility: the big dog had gone vicious and had attacked someone, and was put down. Still another: the dog had died of old age or illness or had been run over by a car when it was on the loose.
Perhaps the owner had to give up living independently in their rural home and had to relocate to a seniors’ residence that did not allow pets.
All of those possibilities came with some sadness.
When I got home, I called the number (which I’ve obliterated to prevent the vendor from being bothered by nuisance calls) to get the answers to why it was being sold. I was given the reason why it was by the roadside and looking for a new home.
If you think you know the reason, or if you are considering purchasing it, contact me.
